ēCO Credit Union remains committed to enhancing the communities where our members reside, work, and play.  Through our #ēCOmmunity campaign, we proudly recognize those extraordinary individuals who make a difference in their communities. Our employees unite in selecting someone who embodies the spirit of the credit union's "People Helping People" principle to be "Credit Unioned."

Homewood’s Branch Manager, Camron Brown, and the Homewood Branch selected Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr. as "Credit Unioned" for July. "Dr. Gonsoulin’s tenured time in the field shows his commitment to the community and the kids," said Camron. "Dr. Gonsoulin has found unique ways to improve youth readiness for college and the work field," Camron added. At ēCO Credit Union, we are honored to spotlight Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr. and the incredible work he does to empower and uplift those around him.

Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr. has dedicated an incredible 36 years to changing the lives of young people and empowering them for future success through education. As Jefferson County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Gonsoulin oversees the function of 35,000 students, 4,500 employees, and 58 schools. In 2025, Dr. Gonsoulin was named the National Superintendent of the Year by AASA, the School Superintendents Association. Dr. Gonsoulin is the first superintendent from the state of Alabama to win the award. This outstanding recognition further solidifies the outstanding and continuously growing legacy of Dr. Gonsoulin.

Dr. Gonsoulin grew up in New Iberia, Louisiana, as the oldest brother among five sisters. From an early age, he learned the importance of leadership and support from his parents. The values they instilled in him ignited his passion for education, which he passed on to his two children and four grandchildren. He raises them with the same commitment to community and personal growth that he advocates for in his professional life. Dr. Gonsoulin is deeply involved in various youth and faith-based groups, working tirelessly to inspire the next generation. Through his initiative, Necessary Conversations, he travels from state to state, engaging communities in essential discussions about progress and community upliftment. He emphasizes that education has the power to transform lives and uplift entire communities—a belief that fuels his dedication. In addition to his professional endeavors, Dr. Gonsoulin enjoys playing pool and participating in water sports, such as kayaking, finding joy and balance in his leisure activities.

When asked about the feeling of being "Credit Unioned Dr. Gonsoulin said, "Whenever the people in the community can recognize you and the work that you're doing, that's legacy building." He added, "That's something that I'm proud to tell my children about."

Dr. Gonsoulin was surprised by Camron Brown during his visit to the Homewood Branch inside of the Jefferson County Board of Education. Camron Brown and ēCO Credit Union awarded Dr. Gonsoulin a gift basket and a Visa gift card.

The legacy Dr. Gonsoulin creates through education expands beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact that resonates throughout the community. His commitment to his community, combined with his passion for education, embodies the spirit of the credit union's "People Helping People" principle. We are proud to honor individuals, like Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr., who strive to uplift their communities.
