ēCO Credit Union has a strong commitment to the communities where our members live, work, and play. We are excited to continue the #eCOmmunity program in 2021. We are proud to recognize those who go above and beyond for their community through the #eCOmmunity initiative.

Each month, members of the community who embody the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” are nominated by ēCO employees to be “Credit Unioned.”

Mia Robinson, Homewood Branch Manager, nominated Ms. Sonja Jones to be “Credit Unioned” because of her joy and caring spirit. She said, “Ms. Sonja embraces our philosophy of ‘People Helping People’ by encouraging and helping others create better financial futures for themselves and their families”.

Mrs. Sonja Jones works for the Jefferson County Board of Education and has served as a secretary for 23 years. She has also worked as a real estate agent since 2006. She is a single mother of two daughters and a proud grandmother. Ms. Sonja has been a member of ēCO Credit Union since 1998.

Mia Robinson, Homewood Branch Manager, says that Ms. Sonja is a light to all of those around her. “She encourages those around her to be financially responsible by helping them find avenues to gain knowledge about their financial well-being,” said Robinson. “She serves others by guiding them and being a teacher, friend, and support system along their way to a better financial future.”

“I just like helping people, especially financially,” says Ms. Sonja. “As a single mother, from a low-income family, it has always been important to me to make sure my children were knowledgeable and understood what their credit meant. I wanted them to understand how to create a good financial future for themselves.”

ēCO Credit Union employees surprised Ms. Sonja Jones with a gift basket that included a candle, coffee mug, notebook, and VISA gift card on Tuesday, November 30, at the Homewood Branch inside the Jefferson County Board of Education in Birmingham, Alabama.

“You just don’t know, this is overwhelming,” said Ms. Sonja. “This is just such an honor and I am totally surprised! When I encounter a person, I want them to feel warm, welcome and loved. I want to be able to teach them what it means to be financially responsible and give them the tools to achieve their financial dreams. Being able to sit down and talk to someone and make finances make sense to them like someone sat down and made it make sense to me is such a joy. If there is anything that I want someone to remember when they walk away from me, I hope their thought is ‘She tried to teach me something that I didn’t know’ .”

ēCO Credit Union is grateful for Ms. Sonja’s passion for providing financial guidance and assistance to help others create better financial futures.

“Ms. Sonja is such an inspiration to me,” said Mia Robinson. “I nominated her because he is hardworking, intentional, kind, and thoughtful. She has such a heart for others and an infectious joy that touches everyone around her. Ms. Sonja always makes me feel like family.”

“We have had a lot of people that have been at the Homewood Branch and I have maintained a relationship with every single one of them. It is such an honor to have ēCO as my credit union because when I don’t understand something Mia doesn’t hesitate to break it down and help me understand. To have the opportunity to give back to my credit union is such a pleasure because I tell everyone about ēCO! I am just so surprised! Thank you so much to ēCO Credit Union,” said Ms. Sonja. “I just love the credit union!”

Thank you, Ms. Sonja, for being a champion for financial literacy and helping others by teaching, guiding, and supporting them as they work towards a successful financial future!
