April #eCOmmunity 2022- Billy Hughes

ēCO Credit Union has a strong commitment to the communities where our members live, work, and play. We are excited to continue the #eCOmmunity program in 2022. We are proud to recognize those who go above and beyond for their community through the #eCOmmunity initiative.

Each month, members of the community who embody the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” are nominated by ēCO employees to be “Credit Unioned.”

Gardendale Branch Manager, Kathryn Johnson, nominated Billy Hughes to be “Credit Unioned” for April. “I nominated Billy because no matter the need, he is always there,” said Johnson. “Whether it be the church, the city, a local school, or stepping in to watch his grandkids, he is always there,” she continued.

Billy is married to his wife, Ginny, and has two children, Lauren Moore and Alec Williams, and has four grandchildren. Billy has been a member of ēCO since 1989, and serves on the Supervisory Committee. He is a retired educator after working 32 years with Jefferson County Schools. Currently, he coaches wrestling at Fultondale High School, serves as a City Councilman for Fultondale, and is the Worship Pastor at Hope Community Church. He also volunteers as a groundskeeper for Cornerstone Ranch.

”Whenever I was asked to nominate someone, Mr. Hughes came to mind immediately because he is constantly helping whoever needs help,” said Kathryn.  “He can be seen anywhere from a local rec ball game to being a babysitter for his grandkids. He is always there for the kids in the community to make sure they have what they need to be successful.”

Billy also coaches at a wrestling club in the North Jefferson area, where they provide free wrestling practice to students. He says he wants to give an opportunity for those who want to get better at the sport.

He says community is so important to him because this is where we invest our lives. “If we plan to be [in a city] for a long time, and want things to get better, it starts with us.”

ēCO employees surprised Billy at the Gardendale Branch on Wednesday, April 20 with a Cheesecake Factory gift card.

Thank you, Billy, for your service on ēCO’s Supervisory Committee, and your dedication to your community. We are grateful for people like you who go above and beyond for those around them.
