ēCO Credit Union remains committed to enhancing the communities where our members live, work, and play. Through our #ēCOmmunity campaign, we proudly recognize extraordinary individuals who make a difference in their communities. Each month, our employees come together to select someone who truly embodies the credit union's "People Helping People" philosophy to be “Credit Unioned.”
This September, Riverchase Branch Manager, Merry Chesser, and the Riverchase
Branch selected Portia Bugg-McGlothan as our “Credit Unioned” honoree. “Portia is a shining example of service and compassion,” said Merry. “She’s always involved, always encouraging, and always looking for ways to uplift others. She brings joy and purpose to everything she does.”
Portia’s life is a beautiful blend of service, education, wellness, and family. She taught for eight years at Bessemer City Schools, spent time teaching first grade in Chicago, and dedicated 25 years to the Skills Center, where she helped young adults develop career-ready skills. Her passion for education and empowerment has shaped countless lives and continues to ripple through her community.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Portia is an active member of the Silver Sneakers and Tai Chi! At 6th Avenue Baptist Church, She also is a part of the Keenagers and serves as the Mission Chairperson. She’s a vibrant presence in every group she joins, always bringing energy, wisdom, and a heart for helping others.
Portia is also a proud mother and grandmother, with one daughter and two cherished grandchildren who inspire her daily.
Reflecting on the experience, Portia shared, “I have been here and the people are so sweet. I just feel great and I love this credit union.” When surprised by Merry Chesser during her visit to the Riverchase branch, Portia was honored with a gift basket and a Visa gift card as a token of appreciation from ēCO Credit Union.
Portia Bugg-McGlothan’s story is one of quiet strength, community leadership, and heartfelt service. Her decades of dedication to education, her active involvement in wellness and mission work, and her unwavering commitment to others reflect the true spirit of “People Helping People.” She reminds us that making a difference is just a willing heart and a commitment to care.
Thank you, Portia, for being a light in our ēCOmmunity.
